The Welsummer is a breed of fowl that originated around the late 19th and early 20th century in the village of Welsum and surrounding places in Gelderland and Overijssel from a mixture of different breeds.

It was bred at the beginning of the twentieth century from local fowls of mixed origin: Rhode Island Reds, Barnevelders, Partridge Leghorns, Cochins, and Wyandottes.

The large brown egg has given the Welsummer breed its fame. Several farmers around the village of Welsum kept chickens that laid large dark brown eggs. The Welsummer was created and standardized from these breedless chickens.

The aim of the Welsummerclub is, among other things, to promote a good production of large dark brown speckled eggs from our Welsummer.
